Totally agree from Calgary's perspective.

Sometimes the best trade is the one not made.

If Calgary still shows defensive leakiness this season forget about seeing the bloated svpct. Eliott is an okay goalie with terrible rebound control and he has yawning gaps in the net. It was the defense in front of him that took a lot of that away. He will good but it will look nothing like it did. Keep in mind, he has had numerous chances to run as the number one and when he holds that crown he finds it too heavy. If you have another goaltender giving him compeition for ice his play improves but only for short bursts.

So be careful about over valuing a goalie. The Sharks watched the tape and look at the two main places they were shooting the puck. Then look at those spots throughout Elliot's career.

Good, steady, mcompetes, blames his teammates, a solid goalie. But not great.

Elliot was absolutely terrible when with Ottawa. I was impressed when he seemed to totally turn it around with St. Louis but he went from a team with horrific team defence to one of the best. We'll see how he does behind the big names on the Calgary blue line.

I don't know if anyone schooled anyone there. Holland did what he needed to in getting rid of the Datsyuk hit and it wasn't going to be easy to do. Florida had to give up a 2nd rounder to clear a cap hit half as high as Datsyuks.

Looks like a win-win to me. Really like Arizona being aggressive and getting Chychrun when he started falling.

Some merit to the STL system making their goalies numbers a bit skewed. But I was surprised to see them give up the 10th most shots last year (DAL was 11th) when Elliot led the league in SPG. But in 14/15 they ranked 5th in SA and 13/14 3rd. Add the Hitchcock system is a defense first one.

I think Elliott ranks between an average and very good goalie and seemingly improves with age.

IMO this was the best option for the Flames, after Andersen. Gillies looks to be a legit prospect and future #1. He'll get his first pro season this coming year and Elliott can hold that spot for him while giving the Flames at least solid goaltending at a great cap hit.

Simply said the Flames left themselves with a lot of options. Don't commit big money long term (MAF/Bishop), insure solid goaltending at a low cap hit while they allow Gillies to develop.

Shots increase against defnsive teams but from the areas defensive teams want teams to shoot from.

I recall a few games specifically where the shot totals seemed enlarged, but t the same time the shots were coming out high and near the boards.

But like a said Elliott is a good, not great goaltender especially in the back up roll. But his ego has always been bigger than his ability. This has been proven with every team he has played for when he has been given the starter's reigns.

Smart play for Calgary from their perspective because buying time with a small cap hit decreases future potential trade values and puts them in a good place in buyer's market.

But the best trade of the draft...no. If anything I thought Calgary caught more value and before the trade happened I assumed he was going to Calgary but I was concerned such a move would be made in order for Calgary to grab Crow part of the deal being Elliott and that a protection clause in the trade should be made higher than a third round pick. Would nt surpris me to see that move come to fruition yet.

That Lenhner trade was a steal for Ottawa, though perhaps he can stay healthy? Talbot was a good trade both ways for a solid backup with potential. Andersen was appropriate value. I think Elliott was undervalued slightly when cap hit and resume are considered. But good comparisons for the value of a goaltender.

Personally I think Zona could have done better in the Datsyuk deal. Kinda let Detroit off the hook in that deal for minimal cost when otherwise Wings had few if any options outside of Zona

And that was how long ago?
Some goalies like Kipper don't mature until much later in their careers

He last played in Ottawa like 6 years ago...he was only 25 at the time

calgary got a solid starting goalie for a second rnd pick.. easily best move of the draft. calgary was a goalie away from the playoffs, and elliot is inexpensive also.. great move by the flames

As much as I'll miss Elliott, it was the right move for the Blues. Allen is a great goalie, and can take over for a while, but I don't see him being our ace. In my opinion, the future of this team is Ville Husso.

Lehner - younger and 2 years left on deal in RFA years
Talbot - 7th round pick cancel each other out. 2nd was a late 2nd (57). Elliott's 2nd was (35)
Anderson - 1st was (30) so just a few picks ahead of Elliott's 2nd (35) 2nd rounder is better than conditional 3rd, but Anderson is much younger and a deal was basically in place when the trade happened.

All three of these goalies are younger than Elliott. A high 2nd and a 3rd if Calgary re-signs him or trades him next year is a good deal for the Blues and pretty much right in line with the market.

buffalo didn't just take lehner....we also unloaded david legwand and his 4 mil salary.

the deal was lehner and a salary dump for their 1st rd pick.

older murray fleeced younger murray in that deal....IMO
